Norled is set to win the competition to build and operate the hydrogen ferry that will operate on the Hjelmelands link from 2021.

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA) has announced that Norled AS has been nominated as the winner and contract partner for the Hjelmeland-Nesvik-Skipavik national road ferry link in Rogaland.

Like when MF Ampere was built, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration has designed the tender as a development contract. At least 50% of the energy for propulsion on the upcoming Hjelmelandsambandet will come from hydrogen. The remaining energy will come from electricity with charging from the quay. There are currently no comparable hydrogen-powered vessels in operation.

  • Norled has been at the forefront of many important innovations in shipping in recent years – such as the world’s first completely emission-free ferry, the world’s first hybrid version, the world’s first ferry with autodocking and inductive charging, and the world’s first hybrid express boats. Innovation is almost part of our DNA, and we look forward to embarking on this exciting challenge,” says Ingvald Løyning, Chairman of Norled and CEO of DSD.

The contract period is 10 years and runs from April 15, 2021 to February 28, 2031.

  • “We are happy and humbled that we are in line to receive this assignment, and we know what this can mean for the climate. We have a great organization that is very motivated to embark on this important project,” says Deputy CEO Lars Jacob Engelsen in Norled.

The waiting period for award is set to 10 days. The contract will be signed after its expiration.
