Oma Baatbyggeri AS and Norled AS have signed a contract for the delivery of a 39-meter passenger catamaran with capacity for 296 passengers. The vessel will be delivered in March 2020 as the workshop’s Bnr 543.

The boat type is a further development of the renowned Oma Passenger Catamarans, many of which the yard has delivered to various Norwegian shipping companies.

The boat will be used for passenger traffic in Troms on the route between Tromsø, Finnsnes and Harstad and is the third of three vessels that Oma Baatbyggeri and Norled have signed a contract for this year.

Great emphasis has been placed on comfort, quality and universal design in the vessels.

Managing Director Gunnar Jan Oma is pleased with the contract:

– This contract, together with the contract for the two sister ships that was signed in July, will in addition to our bnr 540, which will be delivered in June 2019, ensure full employment at the yard until March 2020.

Norled strengthens its position as one of the world’s largest express boat companies

In May, it was announced that Norled had won the major tender contract for the express boat connection between Harstad and Tromsø from 2020 to 2030. This consolidates Norled’s position as by far the largest express boat company in Norway. At the same time, Norled is now the world’s fifth largest express boat operator, and the player driving much of the technology development in the industry. The company is also a leader in fjord tourism and sees great potential for further development of the tourism sector in Northern Norway.

– “Our ambition is to be a driving force for new and environmentally friendly technology,” says Deputy CEO Lars Jacob Engelsen. “The collaboration within the maritime technology cluster in Norway is very special, and is in many ways similar to the networks found in Silicon Valley, with high trust and high flexibility at the same time.

– We have worked closely with Oma Baatbyggeri for many years, and know that they build vessels that are safe and provide good travel experiences.

– Tourism is an industry that has the potential to contribute to employment in rural areas when oil activity declines. As a carrier, we play a key role in developing new and attractive products. The prerequisite for this is good vessels, and we are confident that Oma delivers.
