- The engine on M/F Os had been in the ferry since it was new in 1978. “Over the course of 40 years, there has been significant development in the field of engines, where technology has improved dramatically and become more environmentally friendly. We therefore decided to replace the engine and make upgrades to the gearbox and propeller system,” says Norled’s technical director Sigvald Breivik.
- This gives us many positive consequences. A more modern engine will have significantly lower fuel consumption, higher expected uptime and lower emissions,” says Breivik.
The upgrade of the ferry that operates the Skjeltene – Lepsøya – Haramsøya route on a daily basis means that M/F Os is now a vessel that meets the most modern emission requirements (Tier III). In addition, the ferry has been rebuilt to meet universal design requirements.
Norled has invested heavily in new types of vessels and environmentally friendly technology, and has developed solutions that the company is alone in the world.
- “Norled wants to take a leading position in the green shift, but it is also costly. That’s why it’s positive that Norway has a scheme where you can receive support, and for our part we are grateful for the financial support this project has received from the industry’s NOx fund,” says Breivik.
Other partners who have contributed to the upgrade have been Frydenbø Industri and Hüg, while the conversion has taken place at the Vegsund Slipp shipyard in Ålesund.
