The length of your motorhome affects how much you have to pay if you take a ferry. Bicycles on the back of your motorhome may mean that you end up in a different tariff group.
This year, many people will be on vacation in Norway, and more people are expected to use motorhomes. It’s great to be able to bring bikes on your vacation, but be aware that this increases the total length of the vehicle.
Avoid surprises
For example, if your motorhome is up to eight meters long and your bikes hang 55 cm out from the vehicle, the total length will mean that you end up in a different tariff group and have to pay more. How much extra you’ll have to pay can vary from ferry service to ferry service.
To avoid surprises, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration encourages all motorhome drivers to check the length of the vehicle, especially if you are bringing a bike rack etc. in the back. This can be useful to know before you set off on this year’s holiday trip. If you’re planning a lot of ferry trips, a different tariff group may mean that the price of the trip will be higher than you might have expected.
- Many people will be hitting the road this summer, and many will be testing motorhomes. “We want motorhome tourists to be aware that bicycles, etc. behind the motorhome can determine the fare you have to pay to take a ferry. So before your vacation starts, check the length of your campervan,” says Anders Sæternes of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.
The length of the different tariff groups and prices can be found on the ferry companies’ websites.
