On Wednesday, May 20, Anette Marie Sollie, County Councillor in Akershus, and Marit Kristine Vea, City Councillor for Environment and Transport in Oslo, christened the battery swapping robot SHIFTR at Nesoddtangen. The christening marks a technological breakthrough in Norwegian public transport by sea. <\/p>\n\n
\u201cThe battery swapping robot is an important step towards emission-free and more efficient operation of public transport on the Oslo Fjord. The technology makes it easier to implement electric express boats on a larger scale and will provide passengers with a more stable and predictable service,\u201d says Anette Marie Solli, County Mayor of Akershus County Council. <\/p>\n\n
\u201cCharging time is no longer an issue when boats can have a freshly charged battery installed at the quay. Oslo and Akershus are pioneers in the electrification of scheduled boat services, which provides cleaner air, cuts emissions, and offers more comfortable journeys,\u201d says Marit Vea, City Councillor for Environment and Transport in Oslo. <\/p>\n\n<\/figure>\n\n
Pioneering work takes time<\/h2>\n\n
The battery swapping robot, SHIFTR, has been developed to enable rapid battery replacement on express boats, while the batteries are gently charged at the quay. The solution aims to increase the use of electric propulsion and gradually reduce the use of fossil fuels, without compromising capacity or passenger safety. <\/p>\n\n
\u201cThanks to Ruter and to the Oslo and Akershus County Councils. They have been clear about their environmental and development goals, and equally clear about the importance of stable and good operational solutions. Our shared ambition is clear: the proportion of emission-free operations will increase over time \u2013 in line with the experience we gain in operation, further technological development, and adaptation of infrastructure and route patterns,\u201d says Tone Wille, Chair of the Board at Norled. <\/p>\n\n
As the world’s first operational battery swapping solution for express boats, the project has been pioneering work. Development, testing, integration, and certification have therefore taken longer than originally planned. Prioritizing safety and operational reliability over speed has been crucial. <\/p>\n\n
Increasingly electric<\/h2>\n\n
In the first phase, both MS Baronessen and MS Baronen will operate with hybrid propulsion. This means that the vessels will sail electrically with battery swapping for parts of the journey, combined with the use of HVO (hydrogenated vegetable oil) as fuel for other parts of the routes. <\/p>\n\n
\u201cThe goal is a better and more future-oriented service. Those who travel with us will notice this in several ways. They can be assured that we are sailing increasingly environmentally friendly, and it is more comfortable with upgraded boats,\u201d says Bernt Reitan Jenssen, CEO of Ruter. <\/p>\n\n
The goal is to increase the proportion of electric and emission-free operations over time, in line with accumulated experience, further technological development, and adaptation of infrastructure and route patterns. robot, which will be used on the fast boats in the Oslofjord, at Nesoddtangen.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The installation and testing of the battery swapping robot will continue throughout the autumn, and battery swapping will also be tested on the vessels.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All departures with fast boats and passenger ferries to and from Nesodden will operate as normal during the installation and testing period.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When operational, the battery swapping robot will ensure slow charging of batteries at the quay and rapid swapping of batteries on the Baroness.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fast boats will gradually reduce emissions by sailing more on electric battery power and less on diesel.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work is expected to be completed during the winter.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have any questions related to the project, please Norled, one of Norway’s leading ferry operators, took up the challenge and thought outside the box. The idea of an all-electric ferry was born. <br\/><br\/>This pioneering ambition led to the construction of MF Ampere – a world first and a pioneer in emission-free shipping. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration’s requirements for innovation and environmental considerations set the standard for future ferry operations and inspired further electrification of the Norwegian transport sector. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cutting-edge technology and zero emissions<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MF Ampere was built in 2014 by Fjellstrand shipyard in Omastrand in Vestland county as the world’s first fully electric car ferry. The ferry is 80.8 meters long and 20.8 meters wide and has room for 120 cars and 350 passengers. The ferry is the result of Norled winning a tender to operate the Lavik-Oppedal ferry link, which carries around one million cars annually. <br\/><br\/>Since its launch, MF Ampere has completed over 100,000 voyages – the equivalent of almost 17 times around the equator. It has saved approximately 1,000,000 liters of diesel per year and prevented the emission of over 570 tons of CO\u2082 annually, in addition to completely zero emissions of greenhouse gases such as methane and NOx. <br\/><br\/>– The experience from MF Ampere shows that it pays to invest in electric ferry operation, both for the environment and society by creating new jobs in the maritime industry and because electric operation is cheaper than diesel operation in the long run,” says Heidi Wolden, CEO of Norled.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From one ferry to a fleet of electric ships<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the MF Ampere started up, it was the only one to be fully electric. Today, Norway has a fleet of 68 electric ferries on 65 routes. These ferries represent a significant proportion of the Norwegian ferry fleet and underline Norway’s position as a pioneer in green shipping. <br\/><br\/>This transition has brought huge environmental benefits. In total, electric ferries have contributed to reducing Norway’s annual CO\u2082 emissions considerably. This is a concrete example of how electrification contributes to achieving both national and global climate goals. <br\/><br\/>– For Norled, Ampere marks the start of environmentally friendly operations. “From having Ampere, which accounted for 4 percent of our fleet with zero emissions, we now have almost 50 percent of our fleet with low and zero emissions. And we will continue to work on getting more vessels to switch to low and zero emissions,” says Heidi Wolden. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Innovation in shipping<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The battery technology and electrical systems on board MF Ampere were supplied by Siemens, which also developed a solution to handle the high power requirements. To enable charging in Lavik and Oppedal, where the power grid had limited capacity, battery buffers were installed on both ferry berths. A single crossing requires only 150-200 kWh, illustrating how efficient battery operation is compared to conventional solutions. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From world sensation to global inspiration<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The experiences from MF Ampere have inspired both Norway and the rest of the world to invest in electric ferry solutions. In addition to the electric ferries already in operation in Norway, dozens of new ones are under construction. They follow in the wake of MF Ampere, which has shown that electrification reduces both operating costs and climate emissions. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A greener future for shipping<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norway has set a target for all Norwegian ferry services to be emission-free by 2030, and all tenders currently being issued must be emission-free. The next step is to use battery-swapping robots that allow the boats to run on battery power all the time. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vessels are owned and operated by Norled on behalf of Ruter, and the conversion was carried out at the Br\u00f8drene Aa shipyard in Eikefjord. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The electrification of Ruter’s express boats will result in annual CO2 savings of 2,600 tons. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">– We’ve already put electric ferries and island boats into operation. Now it’s the turn of express boats. This is demanding, but also important, because diesel-powered express boats are the form of transport with the largest CO2 footprint per passenger kilometer,” says Ole Jakob Aanes, Area Manager at Ruter. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MS Baronen and MS Baronessen will join the B11 and B20 services. Last year, just over 250,000 passengers boarded the B11, while approximately 160,000 passengers boarded the B20. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">– Without a doubt, we look forward to offering our customers a modern and upgraded journey with the Baron and Baroness,” says Ole Jakob Aanes. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Upgraded vessels with universal design<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to facilitating battery operation, both hulls have been lengthened by around 10 meters and have become more energy efficient, with better buoyancy and less drag. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boats have also received a solid upgrade of the conditions for travelers, with new furnishings and windows. The interiors of both vessels have been significantly upgraded with better universal design. This includes more space for wheelchair users, a wider gangway and lower thresholds. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Baron has room for 250 passengers and the Baroness for 180. There’s also plenty of room for bikes, with bike racks for 18 bikes on Baronen and Baronessen for 20. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">– Unfortunately, the vessels have been somewhat delayed from the shipyard, partly due to capacity problems and component shortages and partly due to time-consuming innovative solutions on board. Now they are finally back, with innovative technology and significant upgrades that will benefit passengers. We look forward to welcoming everyone on board and hope that people will take a look around and appreciate what we consider to be very nice boats,” says Bj\u00f8rn Egil S\u00f8nden\u00e5, Speedboat Manager at Norled. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From hybrid to battery<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vessels have been converted to sail battery-electrically. The Baron will have three battery packs on deck, while the Baroness will have two. The batteries will be changed during the minutes the vessels are docked using the SHIFTR battery changing robot. The first robots are currently being tested and are expected to be delivered on an ongoing basis when they are ready. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until the battery robots are installed, operations will be based on a combination of battery and diesel operation, or pure diesel operation <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">– The express boats of the future must be emission-free. At the same time, they must be able to achieve sufficient speed, and they have such a short docking time that it is not practical to fully charge the batteries from land. Rapid battery changes with SHIFTR are our answer to this challenge,” says Heidi Wolden, CEO of Norled. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About SHIFTR<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SHIFTR robot is the first of its kind in the world. It has a crane that lifts batteries into and out of the express boats within minutes while passengers get on and off. On land, the batteries are placed in a magazine for charging. This means that charging can take place gradually over time. Everything is automated and the robot is designed to withstand harsh conditions, including wind, seas and tides. Work on the robot has been ongoing since 2021.
